ACOUSTIC ORNAMENT

We partnered with architect and physicist turned acoustic designer Zackery Belanger to produce an event for Acoustic Ornament. The artful collection of principles on acoustics distilled by Belanger is presented in the form of an essay.

The lecture event and book launch was hosted at the Design Museum of Chicago. The event took place during the Design Museum’s All Together Now sound x design exhibition.

Beautiful, silent moving images of acoustic energy were projected to illustrate ideas that ultimately coalesce around a central concept - the Sphericity Conjecture - which offers a potential new way to design for sound.

Newcity Chicago covered our collaborative event and Belanger’s creative processes in Designing Sound: Acoustic Ornament Explores the Relationship Between Space and Sound, published online on April 13, 2022.

“A sound wave without boundaries expands without interruption, weakening continuously as its energy covers increasingly more area. This is called a free field, the initial condition of the thought experiment.”

— Zackery Belanger
