FOOD SYSTEMS

How can waste become wealth? Food waste makes up the largest material in our landfills while millions go hungry.

Baltimore has become a model for community-led composting, where gardens, farms and local markets act as classrooms to educate communities on diverting food scraps from incinerators and landfills.

With support from the National Resources Defense Council and Rockefeller Foundation, the city and local leaders work together to repair the soil, feed their communities and create new jobs. We worked with NRDC and Baltimore’s Office of Sustainability to tell Baltimore’s food systems story and help other cities follow its lead.
